Is Installing Hardwood Floors Yourself Doable?
Most people who decide to get new floors have a professional do install them, however it is not necessarily a requirement. The skills involved are fairly easy to learn and it can be a great way to save money on the cost of your new floors. That being said you do have to consider if it is really a good idea to do it yourself.
The first thing that you need to consider when you are installing a hardwood floor is just what kind of floor are you installing. If you are putting in a true hardwood floor you are probably going to want to hire a professional. However most of the hardwood floors that are installed are composite floating hardwood floors, these are much easier to install and something that the average person with basic skills can do. That being said you do have to ask if it is worth doing. The money that you save doing it yourself may not be worth the time and hassle, this is something that you need to think about.
If you decide that you are going to do the hardwood floor installation yourself
there are a few things that you are going to need. Installing hardwood floors requires some specialized tools and unless you do this
on a regular basis you probably don't have a hardwood flooring nailer. Fortunately these can be rented from most major home improvement
stores. You will also need a miter saw, a rubber mallet, a chalk line and a tape measure. If you don't have all that stuff
it is probably better to hire a professional because acquiring it all can get expensive.
It is also important to realistically assess your skills before you decide to install a hardwood floor by yourself. It is not particularly hard but it does require that you be able to measure accurately and make cuts in a straight line. It can also get a little bit tricky when you get around the walls since rarely are they perfectly straight. If your previous home improvement projects haven't really turned out the way that you wanted them to it is probably best to not install your own floors. A near miss on hard wood flooring is going to look really bad so you don't have a lot of room for error.
Before you make the decision to install your own hardwood floors you need to make sure that you are really going to save money by doing so. The labor cost of hardwood floor installation is really not that high since a professional can get it done pretty quickly. On the other hand the material costs are pretty high so if you are damaging a lot of boards that you end up having to replace because you are not entirely sure of what you are doing you can burn through the money you are saving in labor pretty quickly.
